Journey to Woodstock, NC

ICS Summer Interns

From June 12th to July 28th a group of interns started the Woodstock project. Three interns came to Woodstock, North Carolina, to learn as much about ICS's operations as possible. As things progressed the interns learned many different skills relating to boating, business, and drone operations. After training for a week, they went out onto the water with the first generation of ICS drones. After progressing to ICS's second generation equipment the interns are currently mapping out the layout of the town, thanks to the new sub surface capabilities of the equipments. Through subsurface mapping and using geo coordinates they were able top plot down anomalies that they saw, that could be relics of the past. Red marks were parallel to shore, blue was perpendicular to shore.

The first generation of ICS drones were from the company FiFish. The main drone used was the FiFish V6 Pro Plus, as that had the most capabilities. However other drones were used from the company such as the FiFish V6, and the FiFish V6 Expert. They are great for capturing video of the bottom and specific objects one may need to inspect. ICS still uses the first generation drones to inspect anything they find on the bottom before retrieving it themselves.

Generation 1

The second generation of ICS equipment were from the company JW Fishers. ICS only used one type of equipment called the Sub Bottom Profiler (SBP). The equipment can only be used for sonar, mainly the sub bottom sonar to find objects up to 150 feet under the surface. This is the main equipment that ICS used as it allowed ICS to find any remnants of the town Woodstock under the Pungo River.

Generation 2

Discoveries

Through many trials and errors we were able to find many relics of the past, mainly pottery and other earthen ware. After scouting out a place, digging and sifting through the sand, we were able to find pottery pieces (Left), as well as bricks that could have belong to buildings from that era (Right). Arguable the most interesting items that we found were the decorated pottery (Bottom) which all appear to have had a design on it and were used as decorative pieces
